Ferdinand von Schirach’s Terror is currently the most performed play in the German-speaking regions. A plane full of passengers is hijacked by terrorists and directed towards a sold out soccer stadium. A pilot of the military defense forces shoots down the plane, thus avoiding the incident. He acts against the instructions of his superiors. All people on board the plane die. Because of his (improper) behavior he will be prosecuted. Will he be found guilty or not guilty?
The peculiarity of Terror is that the public takes an active role in the performance. The reflection on the conflict between legislative and moral ethical issues, calls the viewer to take a position on these contradictions and to decide, at the end of the work, the outcome of the trial.
“We must be open and flexible to dialogue, to discuss what are the problems, needs, atrocities and (in)understandings of the society in which we live. We need to create places and moments of exchange and debate, to avoid simple and hasty judgments, to reveal new and constructive points of view, and to bring attention back to the basic values, rights and obligations of every human being”.
